Bilingual Parent Outreach Program

In an effort to increase participation of LEP and/or immigrant families in their children's education, the Division of Bilingual Education and World Languages through the Bilingual Parent Outreach Program offers a series of free informational workshops on various topics.

Goal: Provide LEP and/or immigrant families with information about education, community services, and civil rights/responsibilities to facilitate the adaptation process, increase parental involvement, and assist in their transition.
Topics: School information, health/clinics, M-DCPS curriculum/testing, safety, financial aid for post secondary education, technology, immigrants' rights and responsibilities.
Benefits: Workshops promote parental involvement and family literacy. Information is presented in Spanish and/or Haitian Creole. Free childcare is available. Program strengthens ties between LEP and/or immigrant families, the school, and the community. Program complies with the No Child Left Behind Act that mandates "culturally and linguistically appropriate family education programs, or parent outreach and training activities designed to assist parents of limited English proficient children become active participants in the education of their children." Program assists schools to comply with the Family and School Partnership for Student Achievement Act, s. 1002.23, F.S and M-DCPS School Board Rule 6Gx13-1B-1.011 on Parental Involvement.
Cost: Our workshops are free. The services are funded by a federal grant.

Targeted Audience: Immigrant and/or LEP families who can benefit from participating in workshops in Spanish and/or Haitian Creole.

Research indicates that parents of immigrant students are more reluctant to participate in school activities due to language or cultural barriers. By hosting these seminars in their native language, the Bilingual Parent Outreach increases participation of limited English proficient parents in our schools and community.
